This is one of those series that is so centric to being Vietnamese, that it might not be translatable into other languages. Idiomatic expressions and nuances of the language are powerful but when translated into other languages might not have the same intended impact. Does that take away anything from the series? Sure, it does. Does it make watching this series more difficult to interpret? Absolutely. Does it make it less impactful? No! I still felt its impact. I merely have to translate into my own internal language and give it meaning to me. And this series is astonishingly moving and so full of life. And that life had so many peaks and valleys that it made watching it joyful and sorrowful emotionally for me.
I have a special place in my heart for Vietnamese BLs. I consume them as they are so creative and tell substantial human stories on an emotional level. This one did too; just not as well as others. And I am sorry about that because I think their intent was in the right place. The execution was just not so effective.
“Sometimes love blinds us, other times it lets us see” – Paulo Coelho
“I never knew I could feel so much pain, and yet be so in love with the person causing it”
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea. My love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.”
– Juliet (act 2, scene 2) from Romeo and Juliet
This is a surprisingly entertaining series and not what I was expecting. Literally, it captured me with its portrayal.
Honestly, it is hard for me to be objective about Vietnamese BL’s. There is something so organic and raw about them that they have become incredibly endearing to me. And these two short series live up to that standard as well. It is simply a joy to watch and experience. It is obviously a low-budget production with some sound and technical issues; but what it lacks in quality, it makes up for it with intense efforts on the part of the actors and actresses. It is truly and honestly a labor of love. You can see their complete commitment to this series.
IT’S BEEN A YEAR!!!
This series utterly confounded me. I did not understand it – initially. The story was choppy, incoherent at times, and made little sense to my western-oriented mind. Frankly, I did not understand the fairy-tale related title and what it had to do with the series. Humbly, I want to explain my bewilderment of this series from two vastly different perspectives.
This short movie is simply astonishing. It starts out as another gourmet themed BL series which seems to be the latest trend in Boys’ Love as opposed to college settings. The story line is not necessarily unique but because of great character development, excellent acting, and an immersed story, this movie has become an early favorite of mine in 2022.
