“In Your Heart” First Impressions (Ep.1 & 2)

This drama surprised me because, with all the current restrictions on Chinese BL shows, I was wondering if we will even get a real storyline or a facsimile of one. In Your Heart is based on “Childhood friends to Something more” trope and honestly I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. We are only two episodes in and the chemistry is quite subtle.

As the pilot episode begins, we see best friends Ling Zi Ming (Hu Bo Wen) and Cheng Yi (Hu Shi Wen), going through their normal life and daily routines. Nothing out of the ordinary except for fighting and being blamed for something they did not do. Sometimes they are even being bullied. The first episode only focuses on their friendship, because it is obvious that Cheng Yi has feelings for their classmate, Lu Xiang Xin (Yu Le Xin). Also, Cheng Yi doesn’t seem to be on good terms with his absentee mother and lives with his grandmother. As such, Ling Zi Ming’s aunt acts as the local guardian for both these unruly teenagers. Although Ling Zi Ming mostly acts annoyed with Cheng Yi’s troublesome nature, there are very affectionate towards each other. As always, trouble finds them when Cheng Yi has an argument with class bully, Yue Yu Zhi (Meng Yue Chen), which ends in a scuffle.

As a result, Zi Ming’s aunt is summoned to the Principles office where Yu Zhi’s Mother demands 50,000 RMB to pay for his treatment. This seems like a large amount of money, and Zi Ming’s aunt reiterates that she can’t afford to pay that much money. Yu Zhi’s Mother is however, unforgiving and threatens her with expelling the boys from the school. Left with no choice, Zi Ming’s aunt resolutely agrees to pay the hefty amount. We are also introduced to the handsome Huang Bo Zhi who plays Lu Xiang Lin. He is Lu Xiang Xin’s cousin and seems particularly interested in Ling Zi Ming and Cheng Yi. Both Yu Zhi and Xiang Lin seem very suspicious, as they will surely cause some trouble in the future.

I’m sure they will have their allies as well. This is a drama that I will be watching very closely. I am not getting my hopes up, but I am waiting for it to prove me wrong. The chemistry is barely existent, but there are some moments where you can tell that Zi Ming has feelings for Cheng Yi that might be beyond friendship. I am hoping for a good outcome. So, let’s follow along and see where this romance is headed!
